qEEG Brain Mapping
About qEEG Brain Mapping
Quantitative Electroencephalography (qEEG) is an advanced, non-invasive assessment that measures and analyzes your brain’s electrical activity. Often referred to as brain mapping, qEEG provides objective, data-driven insight into how different regions of your brain are functioning. It can reveal patterns of over-activity, under-activity, or dysregulation that may be contributing to emotional, cognitive, or behavioral symptoms.
How qEEG Works
During a qEEG session, you wear a comfortable cap with sensors that detect electrical activity from multiple areas of the brain.
The process is painless and does not involve any stimulation—only measurement.
You simply sit quietly with your eyes open and closed while we record your brain waves.
A typical recording session lasts 30–45 minutes.
Your brain wave data is then processed using specialized software that compares your patterns to age-based normative databases. The result is a visual “map” that shows how different brain regions are functioning and communicating.

What qEEG Reveals
Compassionate, Comprehensive Care for Every Stage of Life
Brain mapping can identify patterns associated with:
- Attention and focus difficulties (ADHD)
- Anxiety and worry
- Depression and mood dysregulation
- Sleep problems
- Learning challenges
- Processing speed issues
- Traumatic brain injury effects
- Autism spectrum patterns
- Memory concerns
- Emotional dysregulation

What to Expect
Before Your Appointment
Come with clean, dry hair and wear comfortable clothing. You may continue taking your regular medications unless instructed otherwise.
Arrival and Setup (10-15 minutes)
When you arrive, we'll begin by explaining the qEEG process and answering any questions. We'll select the appropriate cap size and mark specific locations on your scalp. These measurements ensure accurate sensor placement according to standardized brain mapping protocols.
Next, we'll place a comfortable elastic cap on your head. The cap contains small sensors (electrodes) positioned over different brain regions. We'll apply a small amount of conductive gel to each sensor to ensure good contact with your scalp.
The Recording Session (20-30 minutes)
Once the cap is in place and all sensors are making good contact, you'll sit comfortably in a chair. The recording itself is completely passive—you're not required to do anything except follow simple instructions.
The session typically includes:
Eyes Closed Baseline (5-10 minutes): You'll be asked to sit quietly with your eyes closed and try to relax. Some people find this meditative; others notice their mind wandering—both are perfectly fine. We're simply recording your brain's natural resting state.
Eyes Open Baseline (5-10 minutes): You'll open your eyes and focus on a fixed point. Again, you're just sitting quietly while we record your brain activity in this alert, resting state.
What It Feels Like
The qEEG recording is completely painless and non-invasive. You won't feel any sensations from the sensors—they only measure electrical activity; they don't send any signals or stimulation into your brain. Most people find the process relaxing, though some feel slightly sleepy during eyes-closed recording or experience mild restlessness from sitting still.
The cap fits snugly but should not be uncomfortable. If you feel any discomfort, let us know and we'll adjust it. Some people with sensitive scalps notice mild temporary pressure from the cap, but this resolves within minutes of removal.
After the Recording
Once recording is complete, we'll remove the cap and provide towels so you can clean any remaining gel from your hair. The gel washes out easily with water, though you may prefer to shampoo when you get home. Your hair may look slightly tousled, so some people bring a hat or plan accordingly.
You can resume all normal activities immediately after qEEG recording. There are no side effects or restrictions.
Results and Analysis
After your session, your brain wave data undergoes a statistical analysis. We compare your patterns to normative databases matched for age and other factors. This analysis reveals areas of your brain that may be over-active, under-active, or poorly connected with other regions.
We then interpret these findings in the context of your symptoms, history, and clinical presentation. This integration of objective brain data with clinical information provides a comprehensive understanding of your neurobiological functioning.
Feedback Session
Once analysis is complete, you'll return for a feedback session where we review your brain maps together. We'll show you visual representations of your brain activity, explain what the patterns mean, and discuss how the findings relate to your symptoms or concerns. Most importantly, we'll use this information to develop personalized recommendations, whether that's neurofeedback protocols, treatment planning, or other interventions.
